When the original pony car rolled off the production line in 1964, its grille was emblazoned with a galloping chrome horse in a square border. This emblem was supported in place by horizontal and vertical chrome bars attaching it to either side of the grille.
Over time, the design simplified. All of the border garnish was stripped away, leaving naught but the lonely silver pony galloping its way across an empty field of black.
